The sailing trip continues towards the area of Les Eclaireurs Archipelago, where Isla de los Lobos (Sea Lions Island) is located. There, visitors can see the two typical species of sea lions in the Beagle Channel: South American sea lions and South American fur seals. On another nearby island, a lighthouse was built and named after the Archipelago, and it was precisely in this area where Cruise Vessel Mt. Cervantes sank in 1930. The tour sails on between the coasts of Port Almanza (Argentina) and Port Williams (Chile) and then enters the area of Mackinlay Passage towards Martillo Island, inhabited by the elegant Magellanic Penguins.

Day 5: Usuhaia

Day 5: Usuhaia

We will depart from Ushuaia towards the station of the Train to the End of the World located approximately 8 kilometers from the city. On the way to the Tierra del Fuego National Park you will see a forest full of diverse colors during every seasons of the year and you will observe as well the reconstruction of an Indian camp and a natural waterfall at the La Macarena Station.
The Train of the End of the World goes 4.5 kilometers inside the National Park Tierra del Fuego that was created in 1969 as a project to protect the sub Antarctic forests of the regions as well as the Beagle Channel. Located 12 kilometers south from Ushuaia by Road 3, the Tierra del Fuego National Park is unlike other Andean-Patagonian forests, possesses forests close to the sea coast. It is crossed by parallel mountain ranges in a north west to south east direction dividing the park in valleys of difficult access. Besides of being representative of the local flora and fauna, the national park keeps archaeological remains of the Yamana natives.
Afternoon  Walking With Penguins at Estancia Harberton. Departing from  the office at the tourist dock in Ushuaia, we drive in our minibuses towards northeast along Nationals route 3 & J, the appealing road to Harberton Ranch. This is the first farm on the island, founded in 1886 by the Anglican missionary Thomas Bridges, and it is located at 90 kms from Ushuaia, on the Beagle Channel. We sail from Harberton harbor to Martillo Island, a 15 minute ride on a semi-rigid boat (vessel capable of navigation in the area). On the island, we walk for 1 hour along Gentoo and Magellanics penguins, always with a guide, experiencing a unique adventure.
Martillo Island is part of the Estancia Harberton, and home to Magellanic penguins between September and April. They share the habitat with other birds, such as skúas (their main predator), petrels, cormorants, vultures and South American terns. The rookery hosts around 1000 nests, and is one of the three Magellanic penguin rookeries in Tierra del Fuego. There is also a small colony of 9 breeding couples of gentoo penguins (Pygocelis Papua), the only one in South America.
